Our objective is to revitalize our city into South Africa’s premier tourism hotspot, while ensuring the townships of Nelson Mandela Bay become the most efficient and secure communities in the country. Our vision is for Nelson Mandela Bay to emerge as the metropolitan area with the greatest household recycling rates, significantly reducing plastic waste sent to landfills, and leading the nation in implementing conservation measures.

Our primary emphasis is on establishing an environment where future generations actively choose to live, thrive, and flourish in a pristine and secure setting.

IMPLEMENTING A SUSTAINABLE SOLUTION:

The key to achieving victory in the battle against litter as a society lies in the creation of a sustainable solution that focuses on preventing the community as a whole from engaging in littering behaviours.

While city clean-ups may offer temporary relief, they do not provide a sustainable solution as they fail to address the underlying cause of the issue.

In South Africa, households lag significantly behind global recycling standards, reflecting a critical lack of awareness that demands urgent attention.

We have recognized that the only path to achieving a lasting solution to the waste problem is by transforming the population’s mindset regarding waste management and recycling practices.

Township Incentive scheme

Objective: Change the mind-set around litter and strengthen communities

Establish relationships with street committees in the communities of the township, who will lead their respective communities in cleaning up their neighbourhoods in exchange for certain rewards and long term benefits for their community.
Street committees consist of leaders who have been appointed in each community by the community themselves.
Each community will have different needs, but the general rewards will include the following should the community be kept clean:
- Secured community vegetable garden
- Training to plant community and individual vegetable gardens
- Provision of seedlings for community and individual vegetable gardens
- Establishment of soup kitchens which feed off the community vegetable garden
- Planting of trees
- Development of a school asset (such as sports field) should 20 communities successfully implement the incentive scheme and keep their communities clean for a minimum of 1 year
- Container shop containing basic supplies for community who can purchase goods with tokens provided in exchange for recycling
- Collection of recycling on a monthly basis in exchange for vouchers
- Establishment of waste transfer site to prevent illegal dumping
Should members keep their community clean, further enhancements will be implemented in the community with the assistance of other non-profit organisations, e.g. crèche for children.

Membership in suburbs of Nelson Mandela Bay

Objective: Change the mind-set around household recycling and make people aware they are collectively responsible for the wellbeing and future of the city

Resident Starter Package– R50 per month per household

Guaranteed to keep entire suburb clean (litter picked up on verges and parks).
Minimum of 50% of residential properties must join to qualify for the maintenance of a park in the suburb (mowing. planting).
Supporting the greater Nelson Mandela Bay clean up to create a cleaner and safer city for future generations.
Discounts at select retailers to be announced.

Resident Comprehensive Package – R400 per month per household

Recycling to be collected from individual homes (once a week or twice a month), and points will be allocated for recycling, which can be redeemed and donated to a charity or domestic of choice.
Can include 1 x domestic worker in comprehensive package which will ensure that the township incentive scheme is implemented in the community where the selected domestic resides, which will improve the life of the domestic and strengthen the domestic’s community (please see details regarding township incentive scheme).
Can add a further domestic to the package at an additional fee of R200 per domestic per month.

All the same benefits as Resident Starter Package.

Corporate Package – Membership Fee is Discretionary

Recycling to be collected from business premises, and proceeds from recycling to provide for employee or charity of choice.
Green Purpose will guarantee to keep area around business premises clean and litter free
Corporate membership is to support the mission of creating an environment where businesses can thrive in a clean and safe city.
By joining Green Purpose, businesses will be fulfilling their corporate social responsibility obligations.

Collaboration:

Green Purpose will engage in partnerships with established non-profit organizations and companies specializing in waste management to effectively accomplish its goals.

Green Purpose endeavors to unite all organizations, fostering collaboration towards a shared objective: a thriving future for Nelson Mandela Bay.

Our aim is to bolster existing organizations by providing support and assistance in accomplishing their respective goals.
